Florida is hunkering down as Hurricane Dorian approaches.

“Dorian is expected to become an extremely dangerous major hurricane soon with additional strengthening likely as it heads for the northwestern Bahamas and the Florida Peninsula,” the National Hurricane Center said in an advisory Friday morning.

The storm is taking aim at the entire state of Florida after battering Puerto Rico and the U.S. and British Virgin Islands.

“It’s going to impact the entirety of Florida, and residents need to be prepared,” Acting Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Pete Gaynor told reporters.

Forecasters believe that the slow-moving storm could hammer Florida for several days.

The governor of Florida declared a state of emergency covering the entire state and officials there are urging residents to stockpile at least a week’s worth of food as supplies.

“The risk of life-threatening storm surge, devastating hurricane-force winds, as well as heavy rainfall and flooding, continues to increase,” the National Weather Service said in a statement late Friday morning.

The storm is expected to intensify into a Category 4 storm and make landfall in the United States on or before Monday with sustained winds of at least 130 mph (209 km/h). Category 4 is the second-highest hurricane classification category on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale and includes storms with maximum sustained winds of 130-156 mph (209-251 km/h).

Ahead of Dorian’s landfall, airlines including American Airlines and Delta Air Lines are issuing travel waivers to and from cities in Georgia and Florida for travel from September 1 through September 4. Norwegian Cruise Line announced changes in the itineraries of its Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Sky, and Norwegian Sun ships in order to avoid the storm’s path.
