Automakers Reject Trump Emission Plan, Make Deal with California
Four major automakers agreed to voluntarily meet stricter California emissions standards than those that were proposed earlier this year by the Trump administration.
The four – BMW, Ford, Honda, and Volkswagen – said they will comply with California’s new standards in a move to show support for a single, nationwide standard that doesn’t increase tailpipe emissions.
“A 50-state solution has always been our preferred path forward and we understand that any deal involves compromise,” the four said in a joint statement. “These terms will provide our companies much-needed regulatory certainty by allowing us to meet both federal and state requirements with a single national fleet.”
The Trump administration came out against the move.
“The federal government, not a single state, should set this standard,” said White House spokesman Judd Deere in a statement. “We are moving forward to finalize a rule for the benefit of all Americans.”
