‘Hadestown’ Sweeps 2019 Outer Critics Circle Awards

The Outer Critics Circle award winners for the 2018-2019 Broadway season were announced Monday morning. The awards encompass 27 categories and include both Broadway and Off-Broadway shows.

“Hadestown” and “The Ferryman” were awarded Outstanding New Broadway Musical and Outstanding New Broadway Play, respectively, while “All My Sons” and the Yiddish language “Fiddler on the Roof” took home honors for Outstanding Revival of a Play and a Musical respectively.

Sam Mendes won Outstanding Director of a Play for his work on “The Ferryman,” while Rachel Chavkin took top honors for Outstanding Director of a Musical for her work on “Hadestown.”

“White Noise” was recognized as Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play and “Girl from the North Country” received the nod for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical.

Bryan Cranston was recognized as Outstanding Actor in a Play for his role in “Network,” while Elaine May won for Outstanding Actress in a Play for her role in “The Waverly Gallery.”

Stephanie J. Block took home honors as Outstanding Actress in a Musical for her title role in “The Cher Show” while Sandino Fontana was recognized as Outstanding Actor in a Musical for his role in “Tootsie.”

Jenn Colella, Tina Fey, Lindsay Mendez, Hamish Linklater, and Lily Rabe will present the awards to the winners on May 23 at a gala event at Sardi’s in Manhattan.

The Outer Critics Circle is an organization of writers covering New York theater for out-of-town newspapers, national publications, and other media beyond Broadway.
