Airbus Enhances Performance, Extends Range of A220 Aircraft
Airbus, which just delivered its 12,000th aircraft, in this case an A220 to Delta Air Lines, announced plans to increase the performance of its single-aisle A220 family aircraft.
The maximum takeoff weight of the A220 is being increased by 2.3 metric tons resulting in a maximum range increase of 450 nautical miles, the aircraft manufacturer said at a media event in Toulouse, France. The range of the A220-300 variant of the aircraft will increase to 3,350 nm and the A220-100 will increase to 3,400 nm.
“In true Airbus tradition we improve our products constantly,” said Christian Scherer, the company’s chief commercial officer, Airbus, in a statement. He added that the improvements will allow airlines “to reach markets which today cannot be served by other small single-aisle aircraft types.”
Airbus said it has 530 orders for the 100- to 150-seat A220 and estimates a market of 7,000 aircraft of this size over the next 20 years.
