DSC_0113United Airlines announced the appointment of Robert S. Rivkin to the position of senior vice president and general counsel.

In his new position, Rivkin will be responsible for all legal matters at the carrier as well as ethics compliance, government contracting, and security, the airline said.

Rivkin, who will join the carrier in March, is currently the deputy mayor of Chicago. Prior to that, he held the position of deputy general counsel at Delta Airlines for three years and was general counsel for the Department of Transportation from 2009 to 2013.

“Bob’s distinguished career in public service, the legal community and the airline industry make him an ideal fit for this critical role on our United team,” said United CEO Oscar Munoz.

United is the world’s second largest carrier by passenger traffic. It was established by the amalgamation of several airlines in the 1920s, including Varney Air Lines, which commenced operations in 1926. Headquartered in Chicago, United has seven hubs and employs over 86,000 people.
