IMG_1128In a significant addition to its Apple Maps app, Apple added transit support for 17 states.

The states are Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, North Dakota, New York, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Dakota, and Texas.

Last month Apple added transit information for Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden and it recently added indoor maps for Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International, Newcastle International, and Milano Linate airports.

The move will provide iPhone users with detailed directions to destinations via public transportation. This includes all trains, trams, buses, ferries, and other modes of transit.

Apple introduced public transportation into its Maps app with iOS 6, which was released in September 2012. At launch, in addition to 300 cities in China, the Transit feature supported Baltimore, Berlin, Boston, Chicago, London, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Sydney, and Toronto. It has since added support for hundreds of cities across the globe.

Apple Maps also works with the Apple Watch in terms of providing turn-by-turn directions on the watch’s display and it uses distinct vibration patterns to indicate if a left turn or right turn is warranted.
