Aeromexico announced that it plans to offer Viasat’s high-speed Internet on 18 new Boeing 737 Max aircraft, with an option to outfit 60 more as well.

Aeromexico will offer ViaSat’s high-capacity Ka-band satellite system, which is significantly faster than the air-to-ground systems used by some airlines. It will support streaming video, downloading of files, web browsing, and other capabilities.   The new system will provide passengers with gate-to-gate connectivity where permitted and will also enable the airline to perform remote maintenance tasks when the aircraft is aloft.

“We want all of our clients to enjoy a high-quality Internet experience in the air,” said Andres Castañeda, the airline’s chief marketing officer.

The first 737 Max aircraft are already being outfitted with the Viasat technology.
