DSC_5013A radio failure on a JetBlue Airways aircraft caused authorities to fear a hijacking might have been taking place.

JetBlue Flight 1623 “experienced a radio equipment problem while taxiing for departure” at about 8 p.m. EDT according to the Federal Aviation Administration.  The crew requested clearance to return to the ramp.

The aircraft remained on the tarmac and was surrounded by police and rescue vehicles. Passengers reported on Twitter that “heavily armed” police boarded the Airbus A321 aircraft to investigate.

The flight, which was bound for Los Angeles, finally departed at 11:46 p.m. local time and arrived at its destination three and one half hours late, at 2:25 a.m. PDT.
