‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,’ ‘My Fair Lady’ Sweep Outer Critics Circle Awards

The Outer Critics Circle award winners for the 2017-2018 Broadway season were announced Monday morning. The awards encompass 27 categories and include both Broadway and Off-Broadway shows.

“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” and “SpongeBob SquarePants” were awarded Outstanding New Broadway Play and Outstanding New Broadway musical, respectively, while “My Fair Lady” and “Angels in America” took home honors for Outstanding Revival of a Musical and a Play respectively.

John Tiffany won Outstanding Director of a Play for his work on “Harry Potter,” while Tina Landau and Bartlett Sher tied for Outstanding Director of a Musical.

Andrew Garfield was recognized as Outstanding Actor in a Play for his role in “Angels in America,” while Glenda Jackson won for Outstanding Actress in a Play for her role in “Three Tall Women.”

Lauren Ambrose took home honors as Outstanding Actress in a Musical for her role as Eliza in “My Fair Lady” while Ethan Slater was recognized as Outstanding Actor in a Musical for the title role in “SpongeBob SquarePants.”

Jenn Colella, Jim Dale, Christine Ebersole and Martha Plimpton, will present the awards to the winners on May 24 at a gala event at Sardi’s in Manhattan.

The Outer Critics Circle is an organization of writers covering New York theatre for out-of-town newspapers, national publications, and other media beyond Broadway.
