Mercedes-Benz announced Friday it plans to expand its Tuscaloosa plant to produce electric passenger cars. The news came at the time of the facilities’ 20th anniversary celebration.

In addition to manufacturing SUV models for the automaker’s EQ brand, Mercedes said it will also build a battery factory near the plant to support the initiative. The company already has EV and battery plants in Europe and China.

The move is expected to create at least 600 jobs in the region.

“Mercedes-Benz will continue to be on the cutting-edge of electric vehicle development and production,” said Markus Schäfer, a member of the automaker’s divisional board.
