Paddington Station in London

If your stay in London brings you near Paddington Station, you might wish to consider the Heathrow Express to get to and from the Airport. While it’s somewhat pricey for a 15-minute journey, it’s well worth it given that other alternatives – including taxi – will take at least four times as long to make the same trip.

Paddington Station itself is worth a visit: an historic terminal, it has served the Great Western Railway and its successors since 1838. The current structure dates from 1854 and is notable as having been, in 1863, the western terminus of the Metropolitan Railway, the world’s first subway.

Paddington is also home to the Paddington Underground station, which connects with multiple Tube lines including the Bakerloo, Circle, District, and Hammersmith & City.

Trains depart Paddington Station every 15 minutes on the dot, starting at 5:10 a.m. (6:10 a.m. on Sundays) and continue until 11:25 p.m. Service in the opposite direction is on a similar quarter-hour schedule. Trains departing Paddington use platforms 6 and 7 and the Heathrow Express travels non-stop to Heathrow Central, which serves Terminals 2 and 3 and then continues to Terminal 5.

Traveling in the opposite direction, getting to Heathrow Central is a simple matter as it’s located between Terminals 2 and 3 and is easily accessed on foot. It has its own station at Terminal 5 and passengers coming into Terminal 4 can take a free train one stop to Heathrow Central to continue to the city center.

A traditional London taxi dropped me off at the Heathrow Express entrance at Paddington and it was a simple matter to get to my train, which was departing from Track 7. I found a car with an empty seat (a front row, actually) facing forward and, by the time I was in my seat and had my MacBook out, we were off.
