The Hualalai Spa offers treatments with local twists, such as a Polynesian Niu or Coconut Scrub or a Sun Relif Ti Leaf Wrap. The property has seven unique pools, which made it a fun game to coordinate meeting someone “at the pool.”

My favorite place was King’s Pond, which effectively brings the ocean to you. King’s Pond was carved out of the natural lava rock and has more than 4,000 tropical fish including a spotted eagle ray as well as a sandy bottom. The ocean pool is carved out of the oceanfront lava rock and features a natural breakwater. There’s also a pool with a swim-up bar and an oceanfront infinity pool. Lounging on the beach in comfortable lounge chairs is a favorite pastime as well and you’ll be well pampered while you undertake this strenuous activity.

I was slated for stand-up paddle boarding (why not?) the day of my departure but the swell was expected to be very high so I ended up having to “settle” for lounging on the beach. Other activities the hotel offers include canoeing, snorkeling, whale watching, and adventures that would include exploring secluded beaches and snorkel spots with the opportunity to swim with spinner dolphins, who are undoubtedly FS employees who will address you by name as well.

The range of activities is as breathtaking as the ocean view. The hotel is the host of the Waimea Ocean Film Festival, with artists in residence, wine tastings, art classes to bring out your inner Picasso, a reforestation initiative, special programs for teens and younger children, and cooking classes.

Finally, there’s a well-equipped fitness center, fitness and yoga classes, and the Jack Nicklaus signature Hualalai Golf Course are available to guests as well.

DINING

Despite plans to watch my diet, I could not resist the array of dining options during my stay.
