Southwest Sees Drop in Unit Revenue, Load Factor for March
Southwest Airlines announced operational results for March 2017.
The carrier’s total system traffic was 11.3 billion RPMs, or revenue passenger miles, a year-over-year increase of 3.9% from 10.9 billion RPMs in March 2015.
The airline reported a total system capacity of 13.4 billion ASMs, or available seat miles, up 4.5% from 12.9 billion the previous March.
Meanwhile, Southwest had a load factor of 84.1% for the month, a 0.5 percentage point decrease from 84.6% the preceding March.
Southwest forecast a drop of 2% to 3% in RASM, or revenue per available seat mile, for the first quarter, compared to the prior year. The airline said that bookings and unit revenue trends for the second quarter 2017 remain strong, however.
