Fraport AG, the operator of Frankfurt Airport, announced traffic figures for the month of March, as well as for the year first quarter of 2017.

Passenger traffic was approximately 4.9 million passengers for the month, a 1.8% increase from March 2016. Fraport said that passenger traffic would have increased by around 2.3%, had several strikes at Berlin’s airports not taken place.

Traffic for the first quarter was over 13 million passengers, up 1.5% year-over-year, and the first time in the airport’s history that more than 13 million travelers passed through the facility in the first three months of a year. However, Fraport said that the growth would have been 3.1% if not for the leap-year effect, numerous strikes by Lufthansa and other airlines, and late timing of the Easter holidays.

Frankfurt Airport also reported a 9.6% year-over-year increase in cargo tonnage for March, the highest monthly growth rate in six years, with 205,443 metric tons of cargo passing through the facility. Cargo throughput for the quarter was 535,764 metric tons, a 5.8% increase from last year.

The number of aircraft movements for the month increased by 1.1% year-over-year to 37,924 takeoffs and landings, while the figures for the quarter were 104,503 takeoffs and landings, a 1.2% decrease year-over-year.
