IMGP4722Delta Air Lines announced that it plans to relocate from Terminals 5 and 6 to Terminals 2 and 3 at Los Angeles International Airport this May as part of a major $1.9-billion project at LAX that will renovate and connect Terminals 2 and 3 to create a hub for SkyTeam airlines. As part of the deal, Delta will swap four gates in Terminal 5 with American Airlines.

The first phase of the transfer will take place on Tuesday, January 31, when Delta will begin temporarily operating out of additional gates in Terminal 6, including from Gates 60-63, as well as Gates 68A, 68B, and 69B at Terminal 6. The carrier will continue to use its nine gates in Terminal 5 until the relocation in May

Delta will be installing signage throughout Terminals 5 and 6 to better help facilitate the move and direct passengers where they need to get, as well as inform them of the impending move. The carrier also placed additional check-in stations closer to Terminal 6, and plans to have two baggage claim carousels for Delta passengers arriving into Terminal 6.

American began moving four boarding gates, as well as its American Eagle shuttle bus, from Terminal 6 to Terminal 5 on Tuesday as well. The Fort Worth-based carrier plans to have a new check-in area at the east end of Terminal 5 to accommodate passengers. The airline’s Terminal 5 gates are closer to the airline’s base in Terminal 4, making it more convenient for passengers to get from one terminal to the other via the tunnel that connects the two terminals.

Delta passengers heading for Denver, Portland, San Francisco, and Seattle will depart from Terminal 6. As always, travelers should verify the gate prior to clearing airport security.
