Austrian Hotel and Guests Held Ransom by Hackers
MUNICH—Guests at the Romantik Seehotel Jägerwirt in Turrach, Austria were unable to get into their rooms while hackers held the hotel hostage after taking control of its computer systems.
The attack happened at the start of the winter season in Nockberg, one of the best hiking and skiing regions in the region.
The hackers didn’t ask for much, just €1,500 ($1,610) in Bitcoin.
Several attacks followed but the hotel replaced its computer systems with newer and more secure ones that have thus far been hacker resistant.
Hotel management even has a hacker-proof plan it will put into place at the time of the next renovation of the property: it plans to revert to old-fashioned door locks that use real keys.
