LaGuardia Airport Adds Cell Phone Lot, Closes Portion of Central Terminal Drive as Construction Progresses
LaGuardia Airport announced several changes affecting drivers as the Central Terminal Building replacement project continues to move ahead.
Last week, with the stated goal of reducing traffic and congestion, the airport opened a free waiting area for drivers picking up arriving passengers. The new Cell Phone Lot is located in Lot P5 and parking is free for the first three hours.
In addition, construction at the Central Terminal required the closing of Central Terminal Drive between that terminal and Terminal C to vehicular traffic, although the pedestrian walkway will remain open.
Construction of the new terminal began earlier this year. Plans call for the new terminal to be built closer to the Grand Central Parkway, followed by the demolition of the Central Terminal building, which opened in 1964. The $4 billion project will feature central arrivals and departures halls and be linked to Terminals C and D, which will eventually be replaced by a single building.
