DSC_1525Deutsche Lufthansa said Wednesday it plans to acquire the remaining 55% of Brussels Airlines parent SN Airholding.

The Frankfurt-based airline said that its supervisory board, at its meeting today, gave the green light to exercise a call option to acquire the shares. All that remains, Lufthansa said, is a final vote by current shareholders.

Both Lufthansa and Brussels Airlines said they hope to complete the transaction by early next year.

Brussels Airlines is the Belgian flag carrier and successor to what was one of the world’s oldest airlines, Sabena, which operated from 1923 through 2001. The company’s IATA code, SN, was inherited from Sabena as well.
