TSA to Open PreCheck Temporary Enrollment Centers Around the Country
In an effort to reduce the wait that travelers are experiencing when enrolling in the agency’s PreCheck trusted traveler program thanks to a flood of applications in recent months, the Transportation Security Administration announced plans for multiple temporary enrollment centers, starting in the New York metro area.
The agency’s contractor, MorphoTrust, which manages the enrollment process, will operate two temporary centers in New York City starting Monday as well as one in New Jersey starting Tuesday. Temporary enrollment centers are being established in 12 other cities, including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Miami, Orlando, Los Angeles, and Seattle, starting July 19 and continuing through the end of August.
The Manhattan location, at the United Airlines Storefront at Penn Station, will be open from July 11 through July 29 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. The second, at the Hilton New York JFK Airport, will open Tuesday July 12 for five days. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Wednesday and then its hours of operation will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Newark location, at the Newark Airport Marriott, will be open the same hours as the Hilton facility.
Applicants can sign up online for appointments.
Passengers at a PreCheck security checkpoint don’t have to remove certain items of clothing, such as shoes, belts, and light outerwear, and can leave laptops and liquids in their carry-on luggage.
“We are adding as much capacity as quickly as possible,” John Sammon, the TSA’s chief marketing officer, said in June.
