DSC_0727 (1)Hilton Worldwide announced an enhancement to the Hilton HHonors app on Tuesday that allows the app to serve as a room key.

Called Digital Key, the feature allows guests who are members of Hilton’s guest loyalty program to bypass the reception desk and access their rooms and other areas requiring a key such as the gym via the Hilton HHonors app.

Hilton plans to deploy this feature at 250 properties in the United States by early 2016.  This will include Hilton-, Canopy-, Conrad-, and Waldorf Astoria-branded properties.

The hotelier introduced digital check-in, a feature that does require a traditional key or key card, last July and it is now available at over 4,100 properties worldwide.

“Imagine if an HHonors member is arriving at our hotel after a long trip or running late to a meeting,” said Geraldine Calpin, a senior vice president who heads up digital operations at Hilton.  “Digital Key can provide our frequent guests the added benefit of going straight to their room without stopping at the front desk.”
