DSC_0890Airbus announced that it received an order for 250 A320neos from IndiGo, the largest airline in India.  Valued at $26.55 billion, the order is the single largest ever by number of aircraft in the aircraft manufacturer’s history.

The A320neo model range currently consists of the A319neo, A320neo, and A321neo aircraft. The letters “neo” stand for New Engine Option.

The A320neo family of planes incorporate many innovations by including the latest generation engines and large sharklet wingtip devices.  Airbus says that these innovations will reduce fuel usage by 15%.  By 2020, the aircraft manufacturer promises to deliver 20% in fuel savings.

The order brings the number of A320 family aircraft that IndiGo has ordered to 530.  The carrier placed its first order for A320 family planes in 2005, all of which have since been delivered.

To date, Airbus has received firm orders for over 3,600 A320neo family planes from over 70 customers worldwide.

IndiGo was founded in 2006, and is headquartered in Gurgaon, India.  The carrier’s hub is at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi.
