DSC_0156 (1)Delta Air Lines announced a number of improvements to its SkyMiles frequent flyer program on Tuesday.

One major change is that Platinum and Diamond members of the program will be able to use Regional Upgrade Certificates to reserve a Delta One business-class seat on transcon flights linking New York City with Los Angeles and San Francisco.  Each year, Platinum and Diamond members can elect to receive four or eight regional certificates respectively (good on domestic flights only) or, for Diamonds only, four Global Upgrade Certificates, good on all flights.

Delta is also adding more ways for members to earn Medallion Qualification Dollars and Medallion Qualification Miles.  Starting July 21, 2015, they can be earned when purchasing Preferred Seats (which are some of the better seats in coach), Delta Comfort+ seats (the airline’s premium lite section), and paid upgrades to business or first.

The Atlanta-based carrier also announced it will increase the number of miles needed to purchase an upgrade, starting June 1, 2016.  It also plans to increase the number of upgrades available and to expand the number of fare types eligible for upgrades.

Recent program enhancements to SkyMiles include new one-way awards that start at 7,500 miles for a limited time only, and more award seats available at the lowest possible award redemption level.
