NEW YORK — Readers of The Diesel Driver magazine, a sister publication of Frequent Business Traveler, named the Chevrolet Cruze the 2014 Diesel Car of the Year, the first time an American automobile has attained the honor.

The Cruze is the only diesel-powered sedan offered by a U.S. automaker and garnered an impressive 59.3% of 11,030 votes cast.

Chevrolet was named the 2014 Diesel Car Manufacturer of the Year, receiving 45% of the 11,161 votes cast.

The awards were presented at the New York International Auto Show on Wednesday.

“The Chevrolet Cruze Diesel not only offers drivers an impressive 46 mpg (5.11 l/100 km), which makes it the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid sold in the United States, and extraordinary range, but it does so without sacrificing power and handling or compromising driver and passenger comfort,“ said Jonathan Spira, editor of The Diesel Driver, in giving the award to Cristi Landy, Chevrolet’s senior marketing director, at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.  Landy originally introduced the Cruze Diesel to the world at the Chicago Auto Show.
