United Airlines Reports Decline in January Traffic

United Airlines announced operating results for January 2014.  The Chicago-based carrier said that its traffic in January 2014 decreased 1.6% year-over-year, while its capacity also decreased, by 2.8%.

Total system traffic for the month decreased to 15.228 billion revenue passenger miles, or RPMs, down from 15.470 billion RPMs in January 2013.  Consolidated capacity for January, expressed in available seat miles or ASMs, was 18.822 billion, a 2.8% decrease from the airline’s 19.373 ASMs in January of 2013.

The airline reported an increase in its consolidated load factor, which was 80.9%, a 1.0 percentage point increase from 79.9% in January of 2013.

United saw its greatest decrease in international operations, with a 2.2% decrease in revenue passenger miles on a 2.6% decrease in available seat miles, while the airline’s domestic RPMs were down 0.3% on a 2.1% decrease in ASMs.  Mainline RPMs were down 1.2% on a 2.4% ASM decrease, while regional RPMs declined by 3.8% on a 6.1% ASM decrease.
