Sofitel Bayerpost, Munich, Germany – Hotel Review
WELLNESS
The So Spa has an indoor heated pool, steam bath, sauna, and treatment rooms. Massages and other therapeutic treatments are available and use Cinq Mondes and Carita products. The fitness center had an assortment of cardio machines and free weights and was more than sufficient for my needs in blowing off some steam.
DINING
It is mandatory (at least in my opinion) for guests to dine in the Schwarz & Weiz restaurant at least once during their visit. The walk down the corridor past massive vases makes you feel as if you arein a museum of sorts and the restaurant itself, with its high ceilings and long but narrow dining room, plays up the “black and white” theme, using dramatic lighting to add to the ambience.
The restaurant offers regional Bavarian cuisine with a strong French influence. Service is gracious and not at all rushed, attentive without being overwhelming. Sometimes my dining companion and I felt as if we were the only guests in the dining room. The food was excellent, from the amuse bouche to the desserts and truffles at the end, and presentation is unparalleled. Let the sommelier be the guide as the restaurant has an excellent wine list and the staff is very knowledgeable. I would not have thought of trying the 2010 Ott Grüner Veltliner (Ott is in the Wagram region of Lower Austria) but it was an excellent choice.
BOTTOM LINE
It’s always exciting to discover a new hotel, especially one you want to come back to. The Sofitel Bayerpost opened in 2004 but I first made it there this year. I am mentioning this because that means I have been missing out on a great hotel for almost a decade and it is now one of my top picks for Munich. Incidentally, while the post office is long gone (having left behind an ample supply of rubber stamps), the hotel’s front desk will be happy to supply a postage stamp for those guests who need to mail a letter.
