At a news conference in Greece, Qatar Airways announced that it will launch new non-stop service from Athens to New York starting in June 2013.  The new flight will operate daily on a year-round basis.

Athens International Airport is a hub for 31 European destinations serviced by Qatar Airways, including Venice, Berlin, and Barcelona.  The airline began flying to Athens in 2005, when it launched service from Doha to the Greek capital.

At the news conference, Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways, said that the airline wants to support its presence in Greece in both good times and times of crises, as the country is an important market for the airline.

One of the world’s oldest cities, Athens is often referred to as the cradle of Western civilization, while the state of Qatar has the world’s highest GDP per capita and a population of less than 2,500,000 people.
