GOL Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes, Brazil’s largest low-cost airline, announced that it ordered 60 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, to be delivered by 2018.

The purchase order, which is valued at approximately $6 billion, is both the largest order in GOL’s 12 year history, as well as the largest aircraft order from a single airline in South America.

GOL plans to renew its fleet with the aircraft, which are equipped with new LEAP-1B engines from CFM International. The 737 MAX is an improved version of Boeing’s Next-Generation 737 that adds advances in fuel efficiency and environmental performance, such as the Advanced Technology winglet. The changes and improvements allow the aircraft to reduce fuel burn rates and CO2 emissions by 13%.
