ANA Orders 11 Additional Dreamliners from Boeing

Launch customer All Nippon Airways announced that it has ordered 11 additional Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.  ANA started 787 operations last October with two domestic Japanese routes and currently operates eight domestic routes plus Tokyo (Haneda) – Frankfurt on the 787.  It will add a new route, San Jose to Tokyo (Narita) next January and is switching Seattle to Tokyo (Narita) to 787 operations on October 1 of this year, as well as Beijing to Tokyo (Haneda) on October 28.

The new order brings ANA’s total to 66, of which 13 have already been delivered.  The new order is for the 787-9 variant, which means that ANA will operate a fleet of 36 787-8 aircraft and 30 787-9 aircraft when deliveries are completed by 2021.  The 787-9’s fuel efficiency is similar to that of the 787-8, despite having greater capacity.

ANA will use the 787s to replace older Boeing 767-200 and 777-200 aircraft.   The current 787s are powered by the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine.  The airline has not yet announced what engines will power the newly-ordered equipment.
