Alaska Air-Virgin America Merger Set for Takeoff

The U.S. Department of Justice approved Alaska Air Group’s acquisition of Virgin America on Tuesday, but put several conditions in place that require Alaska to prune its partnership with American Airlines.
The $2.6 billion merger, first announced in April, would create the nation’s fifth-largest airline by traffic, eclipsing JetBlue Airways, which attempted to outbid Alaska for Virgin America.

Virgin America and Alaska Air Extend Regulatory Review Period but Merger Still on Track

Alaska Air Group and Virgin America said Monday the two would delay their merger plans to allow the U.S. Department of Justice additional time to review their planned $2.6 billion deal.

Virgin America announced that it plans to increase service from Newark to both Los Angeles and San Francisco starting November 18. Virgin America announced the launch of new non-stop service from Los Angeles, California, to Maui, Hawaii. The carrier will operate the service daily, using Airbus A320 aircraft.
