Marriott to Offer Free Wi-Fi to Marriott Rewards Members

Marriott announced that it will begin offering complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access to members of its Marriott Rewards program who book stays directly through the company’s website, mobile app, call center, or a Marriott hotel.
The new policy will go into effect beginning January 15 of next year.

Marriott Unveils Renovations to Renaissance Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Marriott announced the completion of a multi-million dollar renovation of the Renaissance Washington, DC Downtown’s meeting and event space. All 64,000 square feet (5,945 square meters) of the property’s meeting areas received upgrades during the renovation, including the 19,000-square-foot (1,765-square-meter) grand ballroom, the 10,000-square-foot (929-square-meter) Renaissance ballroom, 30 breakout rooms, and all of the hotel’s pre-function space.

Marriott Fined for Blocking Guests’ Wi-Fi Networks

The Federal Communications Commission fined Marriott International for blocking rival Wi-Fi networks at a Nashville resort in order to force guests to pay for access to the hotel’s Internet service.
The agency’s investigation revealed that employees of the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee, used the hotel’s Wi-Fi monitoring system “to contain and/or de-authenticate guest-created Wi-Fi hotspot access points in the conference facilities.”  This forced guests and event …

Calgary Marriott Downtown to Undergo Renovations

The Calgary Marriott Downtown announced it will begin extensive renovations on the property in October.  The work is expected to be completed by next spring.
As part of the refurbishments, the hotel’s lobby will become bigger, with new seating areas and a reconfigured check-in area.  In addition, a new Starbucks will also open in the lobby area.

Marriott announced its new, immersive 4-D virtual reality travel experience, the Teleporter.
The Teleporter is a phone booth-like structure that contains a virtual reality headset, wireless headphones, and multiple 4-D elements.  The device works by capturing 3-D, 360° live-action video, and mixing it with the 4-D elements, such as mist, heat, and wind.
