The labor union that represents Lufthansa’s ground staff called for strikes at major airports across Germany for the coming week.   The move by ver.di, one of the world’s largest with 2.1 million members, follows a long-running dispute over pay and working conditions at the airline.

Frankfurt Airport Summer Schedule to Go Into Effect This Weekend

The Frankfurt Airport Summer Timetable 2013 will go into effect Sunday, March 31, 2013.  The new schedule will include several new destinations and flights.
In Asia, Air China will add a new service to Chengdu, which will begin on May 19 and operate three times a week.  In addition, Lufthansa will increase its service to Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, from four to five flights per week.

In an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Lufthansa’s CEO Christoph Franz said the carrier will begin to offer a separate premium economy section in its planes starting in 2014.  “We are introducing a fourth class now because our customers want it,” he said.

Lufthansa Announces Order for 102 Airbus Aircraft

Lufthansa announced plans to renew its short-haul fleet with an order for 102 Airbus aircraft.  The order, valued at $11.2 billion, is part of the airline’s effort to reduce operational costs.
Of the aircraft, 35 will be A320neos, 35 will be A321neos, 30 will be A320ceos (with Sharklets), and two will be A380s.  The airline will announce the engine choices in the near future.
