New Year’s Eve celebrations will likely be dampened on both coasts of the United States.  Rain is expected in New York City and Washington, D.C. as well as in San Francisco and Los Angeles.  A flood watch covering more than 16 million people is in effect in the entire Bay Area and surrounding region through Saturday night.

London, the Met Office said, is expecting “heavy bursts” of rain as well into the evening, while Munich saw a high temperature of 63° F (17° C) with sunshine on Saturday and Vienna hit a sunny high of 46° F (8° C).

Tokyo, meanwhile reported a high of 54° F (12° C) for the day, also with sunny skies, and Taipei saw a high temperature of 70° F (21° C) with showers.

The outlook in New York for New Year’s Day is sunny skies with a high of 54° F (12° C) and the rain is not expected to continue into Sunday on the West Coast as well.  The eastern two-thirds of the United States will see warmer than usual temperatures but heavy snow will spread through the Mountain West from the Sierra Nevada to the Rockies.

Meanwhile, Munich will enjoy warm sunny weather on Sunday, while Vienna will be overcast and cooler.
