British Airways said Tuesday it is suspending, for approximate one week, the sale of tickets for short-haul flights from London Heathrow Airport.

The British flag carrier said that the move was intended to ease disruption at the airport caused by overwhelming demand and staffing shortages.

Last month, the British Airports Authority told airlines to stop selling tickets for summer travel, saying it would limit departures to 100,000 passengers per day, 4,000 fewer than have typically been scheduled.

The suspension only covers new bookings for short-haul flights to both domestic U.K. and European destinations departing from Heathrow until Monday.

Such flights are typically no longer than three hours in duration, which rules out flights to Munich, Paris, Berlin, and Vienna, as well as to nearby Manchester.

Passengers may, however, continue to book flights from those and other cities to Heathrow.
