The Outer Critics Circle award winners for the 2021-2022 Broadway season were announced Tuesday morning. The awards encompass 27 categories and include both Broadway and Off-Broadway shows.

“Six” and “The Lehman Trilogy” were awarded Outstanding New Broadway Musical and Outstanding New Broadway Play, respectively, while “Take Me Out” and “Company” took home honors for Outstanding Revival of a Play and a Musical, respectively.

“Prayer for the French Republic” was recognized as Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play and “Kimberly Akimbo” received the nod for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical.

Simon Russell Beale was recognized as Outstanding Actor in a Play for his role in “The Lehman Trilogy,” while LaChanze won for Outstanding Actress in a Play for her role in “Trouble in Mind.”

Victoria Clark took home honors as Outstanding Actress in a Musical for her title role in “Kimberly Akimbo” while Jacquel Spivey was recognized as Outstanding Actor in a Musical for his role in “A Strange Loop.”

In addition to its annual awards, the OCC announced special commendations to the standbys, understudies, and swings of the theatrical community who perform frequently on just several hours’ notice in order to keep plays and musicals open, and to the Covid safety supervisors, managers, and compliance officers who enforce vaccine passport and mask rules at theaters throughout New York City.

Special Achievement Awards were given to Johanna Day, David Morse, Mary-Louise Parker, and Ruben Santiago-Hudson for reprising, two decades later, their performances in “How I Learned to Drive” and “Lackawanna Blues.”

The awards will be presented to the winners on May 26 at an event at the Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center.

The Outer Critics Circle is an organization of writers covering New York theatre for out-of-town newspapers, national publications, and other media beyond Broadway.
