The 2022 Outer Critics Circle award nominations were announced Tuesday, although, due to continued pandemic disruptions, there was no formal ceremony at the storied Oak Room in New York City’s Algonquin Hotel this year to mark the pronouncements.

Leading the nominations was “The Lehman Trilogy,” a three-act play by Stefano Massini that follows the lives of three immigrant brothers who founded what becomes a successful investment, their descendants, and the firm’s spectacular collapse in 2008 that led to the financial crisis, with nine including Outstanding New Broadway Play and Outstanding Actor in a Play. “Harmony,” a musical by Barry Manilow that chronicles the true story of a vaudeville singing group in Weimar Germany, a sextet of Jews and gentiles, whose rise in fame collided with the National Socialists’ rise to power, was a close second with eight nominations including Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical and Outstanding Actor in a Musical.

Winners will be announced on May 16, 2022,  and the awards will be presented on May 26 at the Bruno Walter Auditorium at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center.

In addition, the OCC announced special commendations to the standbys, understudies, and swings of the theatrical community who perform frequently on just several hours’ notice in order to keep plays and musicals open, and to the Covid safety supervisors, managers, and compliance officers who enforce vaccine passport and mask rules at theaters throughout New York City.

The Outer Critics Circle is an organization of writers covering New York theater for out-of-town newspapers, national publications, and other media beyond Broadway.
