American Airlines announced financial results for fourth quarter of 2021.

The Fort Worth-based carrier reported a $931 million loss for the period on revenue of $9.43 billion.  Just one year prior, the airline had posted a loss of nearly $2.2 billion for the same period.

Meanwhile, revenue for the period was down 17% compared to the same period in 2019 but nearly double that of what it reported in 2021.

Robert Isom, who is slated to become CEO later this year with the retirement of Doug Parker, who will remain chairman, said that he expects the airline to return to profitability later this year.

The incoming CEO said that the omicron-fueled coronavirus surge has crimped business and international travel, which are more important during the first few months of the year when leisure travel tends to be light.

Corporate travel remains at 40% of its pre-pandemic level, he said.
