Siri Now Works Without an Internet Connection – Here’s How to Use It

Siri, the Apple digital assistant, now processes audio on-device by default in iOS 15, the mobile operating system released earlier in the week.

Processing audio inputs on the device makes using Siri more private, Apple says.

Offline Siri is only available on iPhones and iPads with the Apple A12 Bionic chip or later and this includes the iPhone XS, SR, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, and iPhone 13 smartphones including Pro and Max versions, as well as the eighth generation iPad, the third and fourth generation iPad Air, and the fifth generation iPad Mini.

Apple announced the new offline Siri functionality during this year’s World Wide Developers Conference and the benefits immediately became clear: Since Siri can work without having to communicate with a server, offline Siri commands are faster and more responsive.

To use offline Siri (it does not have to be enabled), the device must be set to U.S. English and two toggles, Always Show Siri Captions and Always Show Speech must be turned on in settings as well.

The commands that work with offline Siri are basic but plentiful; what doesn’t work with offline Siri are any requests that call upon continually updated information such as the time, weather, reminders, or calendar information.

But what does work includes many everyday tasks including opening apps, controlling device system settings such as volume and dark/light mode, setting and changing timers and alarms, and control Apple Music and Podcasts audio playback.

If you do happen to ask Siri to do something that requiires connectivity while she is not online, there is no need to panic as Siri will merely reply, “To do that, you’ll need to be online.”
