The United States will require foreign travelers entering the United States to be fully vaccinated, several people with knowledge of the plan said.

The plan, originally reported by Reuters, will come into place after current restrictions have been lifted but officials have yet to determine when that might take place.

The new system would be put into effect in a phased approach, an unnamed official told the New York Times.

As of Wednesday morning, the world has recorded 201.2 million Covid-19 cases and over 4.3 million deaths, according to Worldometer, a service that tracks such information. In addition, 181.2 million people worldwide have recovered from the virus.

The average daily number of new coronavirus cases in the United States over the past 14 days is 96,036, a 131% change and a trend that is fueled by the highly contagious India, or Delta, variant.

In the United States, the death toll is now 631,336, an increase of 380 in the past day.  Since the start of the pandemic the country has recorded 36.2 million cases, a higher figure than any other country and one that is followed by India, which now has over 31.8 million officially recorded cases and 426,336 officially recorded deaths, although experts believe that both number are in reality significantly higher.

Since the start of vaccinations at the end of last year over 4.31 billion doses have been administered across the globe as of Wednesday morning, an increase of 0.06 billion and the equivalent of over 56 doses for every 100 people, a one-dose increase per hundred over the previous 24 hours.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that, as of Wednesday, 192.6 million people in the United States – or 58% – have received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine. Of that population, 49.8%, or 165.3 million people, are now fully vaccinated, and the total number of doses that have been dispensed in the United States is now 348.1 million. Breaking this down further, 70.2% of the population over the age of 18 – or 181.4 million people – has received at least a first inoculation and 60.7% of the same group – or 156.8 million people – is fully vaccinated.

Meanwhile, the Australian state of Victoria went back into lockdown as health officials there tried to avert what could be a prolonged outbreak of the coronavirus such as what is currently the case in Sydney. “None of us want to be in a situation where we have to lock down again, but this Delta variant moves so fast,” said the state’s premier, Daniel Andrews, at a news conference.

“You’ve lost your minds!” New Jersey’s governor, Phil Murphy, loudly and strongly rebuked anti-vaccination demonstrators who showed up to his bill signing ceremony on Wednesday.  “You are the ultimate knuckleheads,” the governor said. “Because of what you are saying and standing for, people are losing their life.”
