Southwest Airlines announced the appointment of Linda Rutherford, its chief communications officer, to the position of executive vice president for people and communications.

The appointment goes into effect immediately.

The news follows the appointment of Robert Jordan, currently the executive vice president for corporate services, to the position of CEO, an appointment that will take effect next February.

Ms. Rutherford will effectively succeed Mr. Jordan, who served as executive vice president for corporate services. She joined the company 30 years ago, in 1992, and has held positions relating to corporate culture, and employee engagement. She was responsible for the carrier’s response, at the corporate level, to the coronavirus pandemic and the death of Southwest’s co-founder, Herb Kelleher.
