Delta to Allow Travelers to Make Free Changes to Basic Economy Tickets

Delta Air Lines said it would eliminate change fees for basic economy tickets for the remainder of 2021.

The move comes amidst extraordinarily long hold times to reach agents when calling the airlines. The hold times have spiked as more travelers call after not having traveled for over a year, and many have an “unprecedented” level of questions about travel policies and schedule changes amidst the coronavirus pandemic, the airline’s CEO, Ed Bastian, said in a statement Tuesday.

“While we are pleased to welcome you back, the unexpected pace of the return of our customers has resulted in some unforeseen challenges as we ramp up to meet demand and handle a record-breaking level of calls,” he said.

As a result, starting Wednesday, Delta’s temporary 2021 Basic Economy Changeability Waiver will allow travelers with eligible flights to change the date, time, or destination of their flight on the airline’s website and app.

The Atlanta-based airline said it is bringing back hundreds of “alumni” to take calls and hiring 1,300 new reservations specialists.  In total the airline will hire 5,000 people, including 3,000 in airline operational roles.
