Amtrak announced plans to restart service for two historic trains – the Vermonter and the Ethan Allen Express – after an almost 16-month hiatus due to the decline in travel amidst the coronavirus pandemic outbreak.

Both trains will resume service on July 19.

“The state of Vermont has so much to offer – and customers can experience the state and the summer in a variety of ways, as we celebrate the return of the Vermonter and Ethan Allen Express,” said Ray Lang, the railroad’s vice president of state supported services, in a statement.

The Vermonter provides daily service linking Washington, D.C. and St. Albans, Vermont, via New York City, and the Ethan Allen Express runs every day between New York City and Rutland, Vermont.

The company, which is the operator of most of the United States’ passenger rail services, said that a 45-minute ceremony at Rutland Station and at  St. Albans Station on the 19th would precede the resumption of train service for the Ethan Allen Express.  Similar festivities will take place at all stops in Vermont on both lines and those who wish to travel between stations within the state can do so with a special fare of just $1.

The Ethan Allen Express first began operations in 1996 and is subsidized by the states of New York and Vermont. Named after the revolutionary War hero, the train is popular amongst vacationers traveling to ski resorts in Killington.

The Vermonter, which began operations in 1995 is subsidized by the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont. It replaced the Montrealer, which had operated off and on since 1924 and that was finally discontinued in 1995.
