American Airlines will hire 1,350 new pilots by the end of 2022, as the demand for air travel soars despite surges in the coronavirus pandemic.

The Fort Worth-based carrier wants to hire 450 more pilots than it had originally planned, said the airline’s vice president of flight, Chip Long, in a memorandum to employees sent Wednesday and viewed by Frequent Business Traveler.

“Though we were limited in pilot growth this past year, we are now moving full speed ahead with plans to continue recruiting, hiring and training the best and most diverse pilots in the business,” he wrote in the memo.

The news came ahead of the airline’s second-quarter earnings report.  American reported a $19 million profit Thursday, its first since the start of the pandemic.
