Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease specialist, said that , now that people were comfortable with the idea of wearing face masks, they may opt to wear do so during some seasons even after the coronavirus pandemic has ended in order to avoid spreading or contracting influenza.  “We’ve had practically a non-existent flu season this year merely because people were doing the kinds of public health things that were directed predominantly against Covid-19,” he said in an interview on the NBC news program “Meet the Press.”

As of Monday morning, the world has recorded 159.3 million Covid-19 cases and has seen over 3.31 million deaths, according to Worldometer, a service that tracks such information. In addition, over 136.9 million people worldwide have recovered from the virus.

Since the start of vaccinations at the end of last year, the world has administered more than 1.3 billion doses as of Monday morning, the equivalent of 17 doses for every 100 people.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that as of Sunday, 152.12 million people in the United States have received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine.  Approximately 58% of the population over the age of 18 – over 149 million people – has received at least a first inoculation, including 113.2 million people, or 43.8% of the same population, who have received both doses. Overall, 34.4% of the population, or 114.3 million people, has been fully vaccinated against the virus.

Meanwhile, in England, as the government moves to loosen Covid-19 restrictions, friends and family could begin to hug and embrace one another.  Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to announce changes that include a lifting on restrictions on outdoor gatherings, although indoor gatherings would be limited to six people or two households, although other social distancing requirements would remain in force.  Indoor restaurant dining and movie theaters are also expected to be allowed to reopen as well.

In India, the Indian Medical Association called for a “complete, well-planned, pre-announced” lockdown to replace the inconsistent and varied regional restrictions currently in place there. The association said it was “astonished to see the extreme lethargy and inappropriate actions from the Ministry of Health in combating the agonizing crisis born out of the devastating second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.” The country currently sees an average of 350,000 new infections each day and recorded a total of 250,000 deaths.  Experts say it is on track to suffer more than one million deaths by August.
