We were as excited as a group of auto writer can be when we welcomed the first of the Volvo 90 Series vehicles – a 2016 Volvo XC90 T6 AWD R-Design – into our short-term press fleet in the spring of 2016.  That was followed – in the winter of 2017 – with the arrival of a 2017 model year Volvo S90 T6 sedan and a trip to drive the new 2017 Volvo V90 Cross Country T6 AWD in the spring shortly thereafter.

The reason for the excitement is that Swedish autos excite us.  The 90 Series might be something you would expect a German automaker to say but no, it represents a product as Swedish – and at the same time as global –  as Ikea furniture.

For the uninitiated, the 90 Series was introduced with the debut of the second generation Volvo XC90 in 2016. Built on the automaker’s then new global platform, SPA or Scalable Product Architecture the company since has introduced the S90 sedan, the V90 wagon, and the V90 Cross Country, a raised height, all-wheel drive version of the wagon.  We’ve driven multiple iterations of all of these with the exception of the V90 wagon in the interim and our love for the 90 Series continues unabated.

As one might expect, while each is a different vehicle in its own right, they share a common DNA.

All have now been brought to the market and share numerous features and characteristics beyond SPA, including a 9” tablet-like touch screen center control console that consolidates almost all infotainment and vehicle functionality with an unparalleled, well-designed user interface called Sensus.

Sensus supports a variety of apps that include Internet radio, navigation, music streaming, Apple CarPlay (as well as Android Auto), and Park Assist Pilot, a camera system that gives driver and passenger a true 360° view of what surrounds the car.

Up front, the Thor’s Hammer daytime running lights create a signature look for the 90 Series.

We decided to celebrate the start of a new year, 2021, by spending extensive seat time in a 2021 Volvo S90 Recharge T8 eAWD Inscription and a 2021 XC90 Recharge T8 eAWD Inscription.  We’ll explain what all that means shortly.
