Marriott International announced the appointment of Tony Capuano, a longtime veteran of the company, to the position of CEO.

The move follows the death last week of the hotelier’s third CEO, Arne Sorensen, from pancreatic cancer.

Mr. Capuano, who most recently was a group president responsible for leading Marriott’s global development, design efforts and operations, was also appointed to the company’s board.

Marriott also announced the appointment of Stephanie Linnartz, a Marriott group president overseeing consumer operations, technology and emerging businesses, to the position of president of the company.

The newly appointed CEO, who holds a degree in hotel administration from Cornell University, began his career at Marriott in 1995, joining the market planning team.  After leading the hotel chain’s full-service development efforts in the Western United States and Canada for eight years, he was appointed senior vice president of full-service development for North America in 2008.  He continued his move up the ladder in with an appointment as executive vice president and global chief development officer in 2009.

Meanwhile, Ms. Linnartz has been with Marriott for 24 years, and was the company’s global chief commercial officer from 2013 to 2019.

Both Mr. Capuano, who is only the company’s fourth CEO, and Ms. Linnartz, were assigned to stand in for Mr. Sorensen after he announced on February 2 of this year that he would reduce his work schedule as he begins “more demanding” treatment for pancreatic cancer.
