American Express announced new benefits for its Platinum Card.

The Platinum Card, launched in 1984, followed American Express’ 1966 of the Gold Card, defining different market segments within its card business.  At launch, it was billed as extremely exclusive, although that phrase would now fit the company’s Centurion Card, introduced in 1987 and known colloquially as the Black Card.

The new benefits include a monthly statement credit for using PayPal.  The credit is up to $30 a month for a maximum of $180 in one calendar year.

In addition, the general-purpose card issuer is offering up to $1,700 in statement credits for transactions with 13 specific companies.  Registration for each offer is required and the offer is only available to cardmembers who had the Platinum card as of November 2020.

The list of merchants includes Avis Car Rental, Best Buy, Home Chef, Home Depot, Instacart, and Samsung among others.

The highest cash-back offer is with Avis.  When cardmembers spend a minimum of $250 on eligible charges, they will receive $75 back. This offer can be used two times. The other offers are mostly for $50 back, on purchases ranging from $50 to $250, although Samsung is offering $200 back on eligible purchases of $1,000 more.
