The United States hit on Friday the highest daily number of coronavirus cases since the start of the pandemic in the spring.  Health officials said that the country recorded at least 81,400 new cases on Friday, surpassing the previous record that was set during the summer surge in cases.

The previous high was 76,533 new cases, set on July 17.

The news comes as some hospitals in the Midwest and West have become overwhelmed by the rising number of cases and as the daily death toll crested above 1,000.

The latest surge is more widespread across the country than previous surges, which were largely limited to large swaths of regions in the Sunbelt and Northeast, for example.

The figures are so staggering in some cases that health officials themselves feel overwhelmed.  In Illinois the state’s chief medical officer, Dr, Ngozi Ezika, broke into tears at an emotional briefing where she pleaded for Illinoisans to wear masks and practice social distancing in order to save lives. Illinois reported 3,784 new cases on Friday as well as 31 additional deaths, bringing the state total to 364,033 cases and 9,418 deaths since the start of the pandemic.
