United Airlines said it plans to furlough 16,370 employees as it struggles to halve its workforce amidst the current decline in travel caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The cuts, which include 6,920 flight attendants, 2,850 pilots, and 2,260 in airport operations, are involuntary furloughs, which means some workers might be recalled if demand warrants

The furloughs are in addition to the thousands of early retirements and extended leaves that workers have taken.

The total is, however, short of the 36,000 job losses United warned  earlier in the summer might happen
