A passenger hit an American Airlines gate agent on Wednesday after she was denied boarding for refusing to wear a mask.

The incident, which took place at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport,  occurred just before 8 a.m.  The passenger, Yolanda Yarbrough, had already flown from Los Angeles to Phoenix on American Flight 2027 and planned to continue on a connecting flight to Las Vegas.  She refused to wear a mask on the first flight, and her itinerary was flagged in accordance with American’s policy on face coverings by crew members after she refused to wear a mask.

American, like other major airlines in the United States, requires all passengers to wear masks on its flights without exception.  The penalty for refusing to wear a mask is a future flight ban.

“After arriving into Phoenix and being informed that they would not be able to take their connecting flight to Las Vegas, the individual became irate and struck an American team member in the terminal,” the airline said in a statement. “Law enforcement was requested and since this is now a law enforcement matter, we would refer additional questions to the Phoenix Police Department.”

A spokesman for the Phoenix police department said that Yarbrough was arrested and charged with assault.
