The worldwide number of virus cases crossed the 21 million mark Thursday and now stands currently at 21.09 million.  Over 757,000 people have died thus far and 13. million have recovered.

The United States reported more than 1,500 new coronavirus-related deaths on Wednesday, marking the deadliest day for the country since the end of May. The country has averaged over 1,000 deaths per day over the past two weeks.

Despite improvements in many regions, California became the first state to report over 600,000 coronavirus cases.  In Georgia , public health officials reported 2,674 new cases on Thursday.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, warned against the idea of herd immunity and said that the “death toll would be enormous” if the United States allowed the coronavirus to spread unchecked in an attempt to achieve it.  “If everyone contracted it, even with the relatively high percentage of people without symptoms, a lot of people are going to die,” he said in a live interview on Instagram with actor Matthew McConaughey.

Meanwhile, New Zealand, which days ago declared victory over the coronavirus after no new cases for 102 days, suddenly experienced a cluster of 30 new cases.  The outbreak appears to be centered around a hotel worker who works at one of the hotels in Auckland where returning residents are quarantined upon arrival.

In the State of Texas, Governor Greg Abbott warned that the number of cases and hospitalizations was too high to warrant a full reopening of the state. “The most important thing I can convey today is that even though the numbers of Covid-19 have improved,” he said, “Covid-19 has not left Jefferson County, has not left Orange County, has not left the State of Texas.”

Finally, in Hawaii, Governor David Ige announced the closing of beaches and parks in Honolulu amidst a rising number of cases. Officials also reinstated the order for individuals to quarantine when traveling between islands for travel to Kaua’i, Hawai’i, Maui, and Kalawao.
